Expert-guided wildlife safaris to Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru & beyond
Kenya is the safari capital of the world. From the golden grasslands of the Maasai Mara — home to the greatest wildlife spectacle on Earth — to the elephant-filled swamps of Amboseli with Kilimanjaro rising behind them, Kenya delivers wildlife experiences that simply cannot be matched anywhere else on the continent. Tazama Africa Holidays has been taking guests into Kenya's finest wild places since our founding, and we know every park, every camp, and every seasonal secret that turns a good safari into an extraordinary one.
No single destination defines the Kenyan safari experience more than the Maasai Mara. This 1,510 km² reserve in southwest Kenya — and the private conservancies that surround it — supports one of Africa's densest concentrations of predators. Lion prides here can number 30 or more animals. Cheetah mothers with cubs hunt in full view on the open plains. Leopards drape themselves across fig tree branches along the Mara and Talek rivers. And between July and October, over 1.5 million wildebeest pour across the Mara River from Tanzania's Serengeti in one of nature's most dramatic spectacles — the Great Migration.
The Mara is exceptional year-round. Outside migration season, large resident herds of elephants, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, topi, and gazelle sustain predator populations that make every game drive productive. Our Maasai Mara safari packages range from a 3-day flying package from Nairobi to 9-day comprehensive migration safaris staying in the finest private conservancy camps.
The private conservancies that adjoin the reserve — Olare Motorogi, Mara North, Naboisho, and Ol Kinyei — allow night drives, off-road driving, and walking safaris that are prohibited inside the reserve itself. Staying in a conservancy camp gives you the Mara ecosystem with half the visitors and twice the flexibility. Our conservancy-based Kenya safari packages are among our most popular for repeat travellers.
Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya's most iconic destinations, and the image that defines it — a herd of giant-tusked elephants silhouetted against the snow-capped dome of Mount Kilimanjaro — is one of the most reproduced wildlife photographs in the world. The park's swamps and open savannah support one of Africa's most studied elephant populations, with family groups led by elderly matriarchs who have been followed by researchers for decades.
Beyond elephants, Amboseli offers excellent lion, cheetah, giraffe, and over 400 bird species. The Observation Hill gives a panoramic view across the entire park — a perfect sunrise vantage point. Our Amboseli safari packages can be combined with a Maasai Mara extension for a classic Kenya circuit.
Amboseli is a 4-hour drive from Nairobi, or a 45-minute flight to the airstrip inside the park. The best time to visit for Kilimanjaro views is during the dry seasons, when the mountain is most likely to be free of cloud cover in the early morning and late afternoon.
Lake Nakuru, in Kenya's Great Rift Valley, is famous for its flamingoes — at peak times, over a million birds turn the lake shore a vivid flamingo pink. The park is also one of Kenya's best rhino sanctuaries, with both black and white rhino populations protected within its electric fence. Lions, leopards, Rothschild giraffe, and large buffalo herds complete an excellent game viewing package in a compact, easily navigable park that works well as a day or overnight stop between Nairobi and the Mara.
Lake Nakuru is approximately 2.5 hours from Nairobi via the A104 highway. The park works well as a standalone overnight destination or as part of a multi-park Kenya safari circuit. The recently opened rhino sanctuary has significantly improved rhino sighting rates — Lake Nakuru now ranks among the best parks in Kenya for both black and white rhino encounters.
Tsavo East and Tsavo West together form Kenya's largest protected area — over 20,000 km² of classic East African bush. Tsavo is famous for its "red elephants" — the park's distinctive red laterite soil coats the elephants who dust-bathe regularly, giving them a striking rust-red appearance. The Galana River supports large concentrations of game in the dry season. Tsavo West's Mzima Springs — where crystal-clear water bubbles up from volcanic rock — allows you to watch hippos and crocodiles from an underwater viewing chamber. Both parks are excellent for self-drive safaris, with extensive networks of well-maintained tracks.
Tsavo is easily accessible from Mombasa, making it the ideal add-on for a Kenya beach-and-safari combination holiday. Most travellers from the Kenya coast do 2–3 nights in Tsavo East before or after their time on the beach — a perfect introduction to Kenya's vast open wilderness without the travel time required to reach the Mara.
Samburu National Reserve in Kenya's remote north offers a completely different wildlife experience from the southern parks. The semi-arid landscape along the Ewaso Ng'iro River supports endemic species found nowhere else in Kenya: the Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe (the world's tallest giraffe subspecies), Grevy's zebra (the world's most endangered zebra), Somali ostrich, and the gerenuk — a long-necked antelope that stands on its hind legs to browse. Leopard sightings are exceptional along the riverine fringe, and elephant herds numbering in the hundreds cross the river daily.
Samburu is typically visited as a fly-in destination (45 minutes from Nairobi) and combined with the Mara or Laikipia Plateau for a comprehensive northern Kenya safari. The Laikipia Plateau, adjacent to Samburu, is home to the highest concentration of elephants and endangered wild dogs in Kenya.
Kenya has two optimal game-viewing seasons aligned with the dry periods:
The shoulder seasons (June and November) offer excellent game viewing with lower prices and fewer visitors. The long rains (March–May) bring lush scenery, dramatically reduced rates, and excellent bird watching — though some tracks become challenging in heavier rainfall years. For budget-conscious travellers willing to accept some inconvenience, the green season delivers outstanding value.
Kenya safari costs vary enormously by accommodation level, season, and duration. As a guide:
