When Is the Best Time to Visit Uganda?
Uganda's equatorial location means gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is possible every month of the year. The gorillas don't move to different zones in different seasons — they remain within defined family territories year-round. That said, the best time to visit Uganda for gorilla trekking is during the dry seasons: June to September and December to February. Dry trails make the steep, dense forest trek significantly more manageable, and clear weather improves photography.
Uganda's Dry and Wet Seasons
June to September — Long Dry Season (Best)
Uganda's long dry season is the peak gorilla trekking window. The forest floor in Bwindi is at its driest, trails are more navigable, and afternoon downpours are rare. This is also the best time for chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest, game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and boat safaris on the Kazinga Channel. June–September coincides with school holiday season in Europe and North America, so permits and lodge rooms book out months in advance.
July and August are Uganda's busiest months — if you plan to travel then, book gorilla permits ($700 per person) and accommodations at least 4–6 months ahead. June and September offer the same excellent conditions with slightly less competition.
December to February — Short Dry Season
The short dry season from December to February is Uganda's second-best window for gorilla trekking. January is often ideal — the rains have cleared, lodges have post-Christmas availability, and permits are easier to obtain than in the June–September peak. This window is also excellent for Murchison Falls National Park, where dry season concentrations of elephants, giraffes, and Uganda kob are at their highest.
The Wet Seasons
March to May — Long Rains
March to May brings Uganda's heaviest rainfall. Bwindi's forest tracks become slippery and demanding — trekking times increase, and guides use ropes to assist on steep sections. However, gorilla sightings are just as guaranteed (trackers locate the families every day regardless of weather), and the encounter with the gorillas is just as moving. Permits are readily available without advance booking, and lodge rates drop significantly — making this the best value period for a Uganda gorilla trek. The forest is spectacularly lush and atmospheric in the rain.
October to November — Short Rains
Lighter than the March–May rains, October–November brings mostly afternoon showers with dry mornings. This shoulder season is a good value compromise — conditions are reasonable, prices are lower than peak, and permits are available at shorter notice. It's also a good time for birding across Uganda, as many migrant species arrive in October–November.
