When Is the Best Time to Go to Tanzania?
Tanzania is Africa's largest safari country, and the best time to visit Tanzania depends on which experience you're chasing. For the famous Great Migration river crossings in the northern Serengeti, visit between July and October. For the spectacular calving season in the southern Serengeti, visit January to March. For the best overall game viewing across all parks — Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and the Serengeti's central areas — the dry season from June to October is outstanding. Tanzania rewards travel at almost any time of year, but knowing the seasons means knowing which park to be in and what to expect.
Tanzania's Weather Patterns
Tanzania straddles the equator and has two rainy seasons: the long rains (masika) from March to May, and the short rains (vuli) from November to December. Between these are two dry seasons — June to October and January to February. The dry seasons bring the best road conditions and the most reliable game viewing, as wildlife concentrates around permanent water sources. Tanzania's highland areas (Ngorongoro Crater rim, Ngorongoro highlands) are cool year-round and can be cold and misty in June–August.
Tanzania by Season
January to March — The Calving Season
Between January and March, over 500,000 wildebeest calves are born on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti — a phenomenon concentrated in a 3-week window that attracts every predator in the ecosystem. Cheetah, lion, and hyena hunt in spectacular and frequent action as the herds of newborns and their protective mothers create a scene of raw, relentless wildlife drama.
This is also peak time for Ngorongoro Crater — the caldera floor is busy with large animal movements and predator activity. Tarangire is exceptional from January onwards as elephants begin dispersing from the dry-season concentration.
June to October — The Dry Season
The dry season is Tanzania's most popular safari window. Vegetation is sparse, animals concentrate at water sources, and roads are at their best. The Serengeti's central Seronera area has excellent leopard sightings from the kopjes. By July–October, the northern Serengeti's Kogatende area sees the famous Mara River crossings as the migration herds attempt to push into Kenya's Masai Mara.
Tarangire is at its peak in August–October — elephant concentrations of hundreds of animals converge on the Tarangire River, creating the greatest elephant spectacle in Africa.
November to December — Short Rains
The short rains rarely mean all-day downpours — typically a couple of afternoon hours of rain, with mornings usually dry and bright. The landscape turns green and photogenic. Migration herds return from Kenya to the southern Serengeti plains, and calving begins in late November. Fewer tourists and lower rates make this one of Tanzania's best-value safari periods.
March to May — Long Rains
The long rains bring the fewest tourists and lowest prices of the year. Many camps close for maintenance. Tracks in the Serengeti can become impassable. However, for those willing to accept some inconvenience, the Ngorongoro Crater is extraordinary during the rains — lush vegetation, dramatic skies, and near-empty game-viewing conditions. It's also the best time for birdwatching in Tanzania, as migrant species are present.
