Every week we hear the same question from travellers already on the island: "We're in Zanzibar for ten days — is a safari actually doable without repacking our whole trip?" The answer is an emphatic yes. The "beach first, bush in the middle" pattern is one of the smartest ways to see Tanzania, and the logistics are far simpler than most people expect.
The basic rhythm
Safari days from Zanzibar follow a simple template. A morning domestic flight leaves Zanzibar and lands at Arusha Airport around 09:15, where your private driver-guide is waiting. You are inside your first national park — usually Tarangire, famous for its giant elephant herds and baobabs — in time for a game drive with a picnic lunch. From there, the itinerary unfolds through the northern circuit, and on your final afternoon you are dropped back at Arusha Airport for the 17:00 flight to the island. You can be back at your beach hotel for a late dinner.
How many days do you need?
2 days — the Crater express
One day in Tarangire, overnight on the rim country of the Ngorongoro highlands, then a full Ngorongoro Crater tour before flying back. It is the densest 48 hours of wildlife on the continent. Available as 3-star, 4-star and 5-star all-inclusive departures.
3 days — add Lake Manyara and culture
The three-day version adds Lake Manyara National Park — tree-climbing lions, hippo pools and flamingos — plus a Mto wa Mbu village walk with a local lunch. See the 3-Day High Season Safari (4-Star).
4 days — the full northern taster
Four days covers Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Crater and the highlands at a genuinely relaxed pace — the sweet spot for families. The 4-Day Green Season Safari (4-Star) is our most-booked island add-on in the quieter months.
What about the Serengeti itself?
Reaching the Serengeti proper from Zanzibar is best done with five days or more, or by pairing your beach stay with a dedicated Migration itinerary that starts from Kilimanjaro International Airport instead — like the 8-Day Migration Safari 2027, timed for the July–August river crossings. Practical questions, answered
- Do I need a different visa? No — Zanzibar and the mainland are one country; your Tanzanian visa covers both.
- What luggage can I take? Domestic flights allow soft-sided bags (typically 15–23 kg depending on carrier). Most beach hotels will store your main suitcase free while you're on safari.
- Is it private or group? All our departures are private — your own 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof and an English-speaking professional driver-guide throughout.
