Best Time to Visit the Masai Mara (Season-by-Season Guide)

The Short Answer: The Masai Mara Is Outstanding Year-Round

The Masai Mara is Kenya's most celebrated safari destination, and unlike many wildlife areas, it delivers exceptional game viewing in every month of the year. That said, the best time to visit the Masai Mara depends entirely on what you want most from your safari. If witnessing the Great Migration river crossings is the priority, visit between July and October. If you want predator-rich game drives without peak-season prices and crowds, visit between January and March. For the best value overall, the shoulder months of June and November are hard to beat.

The Great Migration Season: July to October

The single most compelling reason to visit the Masai Mara between July and October is the Great Migration — the annual movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest, 400,000 zebra, and hundreds of thousands of gazelle from Tanzania's Serengeti into the Mara ecosystem. The drama peaks at the Mara River, where herds must cross crocodile-filled waters in scenes of almost unbearable intensity.

The crossings are unpredictable — herds can stand at the bank for hours before surging across, or cross multiple times in a single day. A good guide positions you at the river early and reads the herd's behaviour. Crossings happen most frequently between July and September when the bulk of the herds are in the Mara. By October, the herds begin drifting back south as the short rains start.

This is peak season — camps fill early, prices are at their highest, and you'll see other vehicles at crossing points. Book at least 6 months in advance.

The Green Season: November to March

After the short rains (October–November), the Mara transforms. Short grass turns lush, the landscape is extraordinarily photogenic, and the predator population — which stays year-round — is at its most active. Lion prides with cubs, cheetah mothers teaching young to hunt, and leopards draped in green-leafed trees characterise this season.

November and December bring the short rains — afternoon showers that rarely last more than a couple of hours and leave skies dramatic and clear. January to March is the Mara's dry, hot, and ideal period for predator-focused safaris. There are no migration herds, but the resident wildlife is exceptional: the Mara supports one of Africa's highest densities of lions, cheetahs, and leopards regardless of season.

The Long Rains: April and May

April and May bring the long rains — heavier and more persistent than the short rains. Some camps close during this period, tracks become difficult, and the Mara sees its fewest visitors. For budget-conscious travellers willing to accept the possibility of a wet afternoon, rates drop dramatically and the game viewing remains surprisingly good. Births of many prey species happen in April–May, bringing excellent predator activity.

The Private Conservancies — A Year-Round Advantage

The Masai Mara National Reserve covers 1,510 km², but the private conservancies surrounding it — Olare Motorogi, Mara North, Naboisho, Ol Kinyei — add another 1,000+ km² of exclusive wildlife habitat. Conservancy guests benefit from night drives, off-road driving, and bush walks that are prohibited inside the reserve — advantages that apply year-round, not just during migration season. Many of Kenya's finest camps are located in the conservancies.
