But the best time to visit Rwanda for gorilla trekking is during the two dry seasons: June to September and December to February. Drier trails mean more comfortable trekking through the steep Virunga forest, and permits are more reliably available. Outside these peaks, Rwanda receives significant rainfall that turns forest tracks muddy and slippery — though gorilla encounters remain just as extraordinary year-round.
This is Rwanda's most popular gorilla trekking season and for good reason. Rainfall drops significantly, the forest trails are at their most accessible, and clear skies make for better photography of the Virunga volcanoes. June through September is also peak season for East Africa generally, so gorilla permit availability is tighter — book 6 to 12 months in advance for this window. Temperatures on the volcano slopes are cool (12–18°C at higher elevations), so bring warm layers for the trek.
August is the single busiest month — school holidays in Europe and North America mean full camps and maximum demand for permits. If you have flexibility, June or September offer the same dry conditions with slightly less competition for permits and lower lodge rates.
June and early September offer identical weather to peak August but with 20–30% more permit availability and slightly lower accommodation prices. If school holidays don't constrain you, these months give the best overall value in peak season.
A shorter but highly reliable dry window that often offers better value than the June–September peak. December combines gorilla trekking with the festive season for many travellers. January and February are arguably Rwanda's sweet spot — conditions are excellent, crowds are lower, and permit availability is noticeably better than peak season. The heaviest rainfall falls between March and May, with April typically the wettest month. Trails in Volcanoes National Park become genuinely challenging — steep volcanic slopes covered in wet vegetation can be exhausting and slippery. However, the gorilla experience itself is unaffected — the families are still found, the encounters are still extraordinary, and permit prices remain at $1,500 USD. Lodge rates drop noticeably, making this the best value time to visit Rwanda. The forest is also dramatically lush and beautiful in the rains.
Wet season treks are significantly more strenuous. Wear waterproof gaiters, bring trekking poles, and choose lodges at higher elevation near the park gate to reduce commute time. Gorilla encounters are no less magnificent — the lush jungle is arguably more dramatic in the rain.
Lighter rains than the March–May period, with many days remaining dry or only receiving afternoon showers. This shoulder season offers a good balance — manageable conditions, lower prices, and easier permit availability. October–November is when Akagera National Park on Rwanda's eastern border is particularly rewarding: the landscape is vibrantly green, game is well-watered and active, and lion prides are easier to track in the lower vegetation.
